Studio Ghibli Inc. on Wednesday dropped the official trailer of "The Boy and the Heron", an animated film directed by critically acclaimed Japanese director and Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki.
The 1-minute and 12-second trailer opens with a young boy named Mahito, who is running across an alley and seemingly trying to save his mother from a blazing building.
The scene then transitioned to Mahito interacting with various creatures, including a human covered with fire.
"Where death comes to an end, life finds a new beginning," the text in the trailer reads.
The official trailer ends with the young boy facing a rectangular illuminating object.
"About time you came," a voice in the background said.
According to Studio Ghibli Inc., "The Boy and the Heron" is a semi-autobiographical fantasy that centers on life, death, and creation, in tribute to friendship.
The animated film, previously titled “How Do You Live", will be premiered in theaters and IMAX in the United States and Canada on December 8.
"The Boy and the Heron" is Hayao Miyazaki's first directed film in 10 years since he retired.
The Japanese director is known for his popular animated films such as Spirited Away (2001); Howl’s Moving Castle (2004); and The Wind Rises (2013).
